Managing Multiple Brokers and Choosing Your Primary Broker

You can connect more than one broker to your Markup account, and switch which one is your primary broker at any time. Here is how it works, in the order you will actually see it on screen.

Step 1: Go to Broker Settings
  1. Open Broker Settings from the menu.
  2. Every broker you have connected is listed here, each showing its current status.

Step 2: Understand What You're Looking At

  1. Primary + Connected: this is your current primary broker. All your trades execute through it. You will see a "Re-auth" button next to it.
  2. Connected (not Primary): this broker is linked and its session is active, but it is not receiving your orders right now. It also shows a "Re-auth" button.
  3. Session Expired: this broker's session has lapsed and needs to be reconnected before it can be used at all, whether as primary or not. It shows a "Reconnect" button.

Step 3: Choose Your Primary Broker

  1. If the broker you want as primary is already Connected, click "Re-auth" on it.
  2. If that broker's session has expired, click "Reconnect" instead.
  3. Either action makes that broker your new primary. Every trade you place from that point on executes through it, and whichever broker was primary before now shows as Connected (not Primary).

Why This Matters
  1. Only one broker executes trades at any given time, whichever is currently marked Primary.
  2. A broker that's connected but not primary won't receive any orders, even if that's the broker you actually intended for a specific strategy.

If You Route Different Strategies Through Different Brokers, Read This

Trade execution follows whichever broker is primary right now, not which broker you originally intended for a given strategy. This matters if you're running more than one strategy and want each one to execute through a specific broker.

  1. Say you want Swing Select - Collection trades to go through Zerodha, and Model Portfolios to go through Definedge Securities.
  2. Before accepting a Collection trigger, make sure Zerodha is set as primary.
  3. Before accepting Model Portfolios rebalance, switch primary to Definedge Securities first.
  4. If you accept a trigger while the broker not intended for that strategy is set as primary, the trade still goes through, just through whichever broker was primary at that moment, not the one you meant to use for that strategy.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind
  1. The system does not know which broker you meant for a strategy, it only checks which broker is primary right now. Worth double-checking this yourself before you click Trade Now.
  2. Check which broker is marked Primary before accepting any trigger, especially if you are running multiple strategies across multiple brokers.
  3. Switching primary broker takes effect immediately and applies to every trade going forward, not just to one strategy.

Why Sessions Expire
  1. Every broker session expires after a period of time and needs to be reconnected.
  2. The expiry period varies by broker. For example, a Zerodha session expires every trading day.
  3. For a broker-wise breakdown of session expiry timelines, see Which Brokers Are Available on Markup.club.
