Modify Your Investment Amount and Holdings on a Model Portfolio | Markup.club

How to Modify Your Investment Amount on a Model Portfolio

Every Model Portfolio has its own minimum and maximum investment amount. If you try to set your investment below the minimum, the system will not accept it, this is expected behavior, not an error. Here is how to check your current investment and change it, whether you want to add more or bring it down to the minimum, plus what to do if a shortfall in funding affects your investment, and how to sync manually executed trades back into your dashboard.

Changing Your Investment Amount (Modify Investment)

Step 1: Go to Your Dashboard

Open your Markup dashboard. Scroll down past the holdings summary to the Portfolio Models section, which lists each Model Portfolio you are invested in along with Total Invested, Current Value, Returns, and other metrics.

Step 2: Open the Model Portfolio

Find the Model Portfolio you want to modify and click View in the Actions column.

Step 3: Click Modify Investment

On the portfolio detail page, you will see two buttons at the top right, Modify Investment and Modify Holdings. Click Modify Investment.

Step 4: Choose Top Up or Full Amount

A window opens showing your current invested amount, for example, ₹10,00,000 invested in MQ-FlexiCap Momentum. You have two options:

  • Top Up: use this if you want to add more on top of your existing investment. Enter only the additional amount, not the total.
  • Full Amount: use this if you want to reset your total investment to a specific value, including bringing it down. Enter the entire investment value you want to hold, for example ₹5,00,000.

Enter your amount and click Confirm Allocation. If the amount you enter is below the minimum for that Model Portfolio, it will not be accepted. For MQ-FlexiCap Momentum, the minimum investment is ₹5,00,000, and the maximum is ₹2,00,00,000. Other Model Portfolios may have their own minimum and maximum range, shown in this same window.

Once confirmed, you will be given the option to rebalance immediately or at a later time.

Example: Investing With an Insufficient Funded Balance

Before any order is placed, the system checks the amount you have chosen to invest against what is actually available in your connected broker account. If there is a shortfall, you will see this flagged before execution, and you can choose to add funds and recalculate, or proceed with a partial allocation. If you want to understand this deposit shortfall behavior in more depth, read Why Might I Need to Deposit Extra Funds on Rebalance Day.

Here is what that looks like in practice. An investor set ₹12,00,000 as the investment allocation amount at the start, but only ₹7,88,109 was available in their Zerodha account at the time. The system flagged this deficit before execution. The investor chose to proceed anyway.

Because the system builds a portfolio to match the amount available in your Zerodha account, not the investment allocation amount you set at the start, it executed a portfolio sized to the ₹7,88,109 available, roughly 66 percent of the ₹12,00,000 desired investment allocation, across every stock in the model. The remaining 34 percent, about ₹4,11,891, was not executed and stayed pending.

This is not a missed purchase. Everything that was available was invested. The pending portion reflects the choice made to proceed with a partial allocation rather than wait to fund the full amount.

To complete this later, add the remaining amount to your Zerodha account and rebalance, or use Modify Investment to set a new investment allocation amount that matches what you are able to fund.

Syncing Manually Executed Trades With Modify Holdings

If you correct a shortfall or rebalance yourself, for example buying or selling positions directly through your broker rather than through the app, your Markup dashboard will not reflect those trades automatically, since it did not place them. To bring your dashboard back in line with your actual holdings, use Modify Holdings.

Step 1: From the portfolio detail page, click Modify Holdings, the green button next to Modify Investment.

Step 2: In the Edit Model Portfolio Positions window, add each position you bought or sold manually. Enter the stock symbol, exchange, the entry price at which you bought or sold it, and the quantity, then click Add for each position.

Step 3: Once every manually executed trade is added, click Done Editing to save. Your dashboard will now reflect these holdings correctly.

Modify Holdings does not place any new orders with your broker. It only updates what Markup records as your holdings, to match trades you have already made elsewhere.

Quick Summary

QuestionAnswer
Can I reduce my investment below the minimum? No, each Model Portfolio has its own minimum, entering a lower amount will not be accepted.
I set my investment allocation amount but only part of it went through, why?The system only executes what is actually available in your broker account, not your full desired investment allocation. The remaining portion stays pending until you add the balance or adjust your target using Modify Investment.
I made trades manually outside the app to fix a shortfall, will Markup show them? Not automatically. Use Modify Holdings to add the symbol, exchange, entry price, and quantity for each trade so your dashboard reflects them correctly.
Does Modify Holdings place any new orders? No, it only updates what Markup records as your holdings, it does not execute trades.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

  • Top Up adds to your existing investment. Full Amount replaces it with a new total, this is the option to use if you want to reduce your investment.
  • Each Model Portfolio sets its own minimum and maximum, always check the range shown in the Modify Investment window before entering an amount.
  • Modify Holdings is for syncing your dashboard with trades already made elsewhere, it does not send any orders to your broker.
