What is DDPI and how to activate it | Markup.club

What is DDPI and How Does It Speed Up Trade Execution?

DDPI (Demat Debit and Pledge Instruction) is a document that lets your broker debit securities from your demat account and deliver them to the exchange when you sell.

  1. Without DDPI, you need to authorize each sell order separately using your CDSL TPIN and an OTP.
  2. With DDPI activated, that step is skipped. Your broker is already authorized to debit the shares once you place the sell order.

Does DDPI give my broker permission to sell my holdings on their own?
No. DDPI only authorizes your broker to debit shares for sell orders that you have placed. It does not give your broker (or anyone else) standing authority to sell your holdings on their own initiative. You are still the one placing every trade — DDPI simply removes the extra manual TPIN/OTP confirmation step that follows.

Why It Matters for Markup Users:

Markup trades are placed the moment a recommendation is triggered, and signals are pushed the instant they're generated — often within a fairly narrow window during market hours. Without DDPI, every sell order requires you to stop and manually enter your CDSL TPIN and OTP before it can go through. That extra step costs time on trades where timing matters.

For Swing Select Equity specifically, DDPI activation is effectively necessary, not just a convenience. Here's why: when a sell order is placed without DDPI, your broker will not execute it — the order simply fails. You would then need to manually re-enter the sell/exit order using your TPIN and OTP. Without DDPI, you're likely to see a higher number of failed orders on equity sell triggers. We strongly recommend activating DDPI if you're subscribed to any equity strategy.

Does DDPI apply to derivatives (F&O) trades too?
No. DDPI applies only to equity holdings sold from your demat account. It has no bearing on F&O trades, since derivatives don't involve delivery of securities from your demat holdings in the same way. If you're only subscribed to Swing Select Derivatives, DDPI activation isn't required for your trades to execute — it's specifically relevant to equity sell orders.

How to Activate It:

  1. DDPI is set up directly with your broker, not through Markup. The steps vary slightly broker to broker.
  2. For example, on Zerodha: Console → Account → Demat → enable DDPI → e-sign using your Aadhaar number and OTP.
  3. Check your own broker's app or website for the equivalent option if you're not on Zerodha.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind:

  1. DDPI is a one-time setup. Once activated, it remains active indefinitely — there's no need to renew or repeat the process.
  2. Some brokers charge a small one-time fee to activate it.
  3. Activation typically takes about a day to process.
  4. Revoking DDPI: If you ever want to turn it off, you can reach out to your broker directly and request revocation. Once revoked, you'll go back to authorizing each equity sell order manually via TPIN and OTP.
